Border Control - First day on the job

This is the second blog on BORDER CONTROL, if you are interested in reading the first one you can find it here.

Hello (again),  I'm Libero, one of the programmers at JamBellGames and director of  BORDER CONTROL.

Before getting into this update, I wanted to share that we released our first game on Steam.
It is called Ignis Dei and you can play it right now , if you like short horror adventures you might enjoy this one, and it's FREE!

Ignis Dei

Back to BORDER CONTROL

It's been a while since the last blog. I've been quite busy setting up the "job" part of the game and I'm getting the very first Alpha build ready.
This build will focus solely on testing the basic job gameplay loop: vehicles driving in and out, checking the luggage and reporting the illegal drivers.

A lot of new models have been created, these are all things that can be found inside the vehicles.
Some of these are original models, others are free assets that have been adapted and reworked.

Containers

Cargo - Food and Tobacco

Cargo - Weapons

Consumables

Trash

Cargo - Narcotics and Alcohol

Personal items

These containers and their contents appear fully randomised, using a "container placer"  that spawns the asset in the game.

You have to find these containers hidden inside the vehicles and open them to check the contents.

Speaking of vehicles, the first one developed for the game was the model that took longer to make. However I'm quite happy with the result.

And I've also created a paint shader that randomizes the color, dirt and rust.

I might upload this shader somewhere once it's finalised and cleaned up. It's nothing fancy but does the job.

Up next, someone has to drive these vehicles and this fella volunteered for the job.

They call him John Border.

The basic gameplay loop is starting to take shape, as we put this all together.

- A vehicle will drive in
- Talk to the driver and get the ID
- Check the ID on the computer
- Return the ID

- Search the vehicle for cargo that is marked as illegal for the day.
- Report the vehicle if you think it's illegal.
- At the end of the day, go to sleep and see how well you did

This is it for now.
The system is very barebone but the plan is to expand it. To make it more fun and interesting by adding more vehicles, and also tools to help you search for illegal cargo that will get increasingly difficult to find.
But before doing that I think I'll take a break to collect some feedback and ideas. I'll also start working on combat mechanics.

If you made it all the way to the end: thank you for reading this and tune in next time to see some enemies, weapons and other fun stuff.

Ciao!
